Valerie Stimac, author of Lonely Planet’s Stargazing Around the World: A Tour of the Night Sky, shares some of her favorite places to witness the splendors of the cosmos.

Few natural wonders rival the awe inspired by a pristine night sky, where the Milky Way stretches across the darkness—a sight increasingly threatened by light pollution and urban expansion. From April 21 to 28, the world observes International Dark Sky Week, an initiative led by Dark Sky to raise awareness and support for the protection of night skies globally.

Of course, you can seek out dark skies any time of year. As a stargazing enthusiast, I’m often asked about the best places to do just that. Below are some of my top recommendations—but consider this a starting point. Let it inspire your own journey into the growing world of astrotourism.

Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

Nestled high in the Andes, the Salar de Uyuni is the world’s largest salt flat, formed from ancient lakes. When dry, it offers a seemingly endless white plain under a dome of blue. When lightly flooded, it becomes a giant mirror, perfectly reflecting the sky and clouds, blurring the line between earth and heaven.

Exploring Salar de Uyuni is logistically complex, so joining a tour is recommended. After dark, the vast, open space and minimal development create ideal conditions for stargazing. Specialized operators like Ruta Verde offer astronomy-focused trips, though many local providers also accommodate night sky viewing.

Southwestern USA: Utah and Arizona

When it comes to density of world-class dark sky sites, the American Southwest stands unmatched. Southern Utah and northern Arizona are home to an exceptional number of International Dark Sky Places.

Consider visiting all five of Utah’s “Mighty 5” national parks—each a certified dark sky park—or head to Arizona’s Grand Canyon National Park and the adjacent Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument, where immense geological formations meet equally expansive star-filled skies.

Mont-Mégantic, Canada

Parc National du Mont-Mégantic is home to the world’s first International Dark Sky Reserve. Covering more than 3,300 square miles in southern Québec, the reserve includes the town of Sherbrooke, the national park, and the renowned Mont-Mégantic Observatory.

By day, visitors enjoy hiking, snowshoeing, and wildlife watching. After dark, the park becomes a stargazer’s haven. The observatory houses the second-largest telescope in eastern Canada and offers public tours and astronomy programs. Don’t miss the ASTROlab visitor center and the Popular Observatory for deeper cosmic exploration.

NamibRand Nature Reserve, Namibia

Some of the finest stargazing spots are found far from city lights—like the NamibRand Nature Reserve, a vast protected area within the Namib Desert. Established in 1984 through the collaboration of local landowners, the reserve was certified as a Dark Sky Reserve in 2012.

Strict lighting regulations help preserve the natural darkness, benefiting both astronomy and local wildlife. The remote, arid landscape offers breathtaking night skies free from light pollution.

Mt. Bromo, Indonesia

Located in East Java, Mt. Bromo is best known as an active volcano and sunrise destination. Yet it’s also emerging as a remarkable stargazing site. Its position near the equator allows clear views of the southern night sky, including the Magellanic Clouds and meteor showers like the Southern Taurids.

Stargazing here is mostly self-guided, though many combine an early morning astronomy session with sunrise viewing from Mt. Penanjakan. Plan your visit around the annual Yadnya Kasada ceremony for a unique cultural and celestial experience.

Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve, New Zealand

Māori culture has deep connections to the night sky, using stars and constellations for navigation and storytelling. Today, New Zealand remains a sanctuary for astronomers and stargazers.

The Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve, on the South Island, was established in 2012 to protect the region’s exceptional darkness. It includes Aoraki/Mt. Cook National Park and the Mackenzie Basin. For guided stargazing, book a tour with Dark Sky Project to access the telescopes at Mt. John Observatory.

The Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland

Ireland’s western coastal route, the Wild Atlantic Way, is not only a scenic driving destination—it’s also becoming a stargazing corridor. Local communities have worked to earn dark sky designations, such as the Kerry Dark Sky Reserve, shielded from light pollution by surrounding mountains.

Further north, Wild Nephin National Park in County Mayo offers exceptionally dark skies. I had the chance to visit in late 2019 and was stunned by the clarity and depth of the starry views. Be mindful of Ireland’s changeable weather, as cloud cover can affect visibility.

Wadi Rum, Jordan

I’ll close with a personal favorite: Wadi Rum in Jordan. Often called the “Valley of the Moon” (or even compared to Mars), this desert landscape of red rock formations has served as a filming location for movies like The Martian and Rogue One.

By day, the terrain is dramatic and unworldly. By night, with little light pollution for miles, the sky comes alive with stars. Sleeping under the cosmos in Wadi Rum is a humbling experience—one that connects you to the timeless human practice of looking up in wonder.
